The hidden costs and risks behind the teeth whitening boom
Teeth whitening is growing in popularity, especially among younger people. Many now see bright smiles as a priority, with 73% of those aged 16 to 29 valuing white teeth highly. But the trend has also raised concerns about safety and cost.
Professional in-office whitening remains the most effective option, though prices range from €300 to €800 per session. Dentist-supervised at-home kits offer a middle ground, costing between €200 and €400. Over-the-counter products are far cheaper, at €20 to €100, but deliver weaker results.
Statutory health insurance rarely covers cosmetic treatments like whitening. However, some dental supplement plans now include allowances of €150 to €300 per year. This shift is helping more people access professional treatments.
Dentists have warned against unregulated products and aggressive treatments. Poor-quality whitening kits or salon procedures can permanently damage enamel and increase sensitivity. Despite the risks, the trend has reshaped oral care habits, with younger people researching methods more carefully.
Interestingly, the surge in whitening has also led to a decline in extreme preferences among adolescents. Many now favour a more natural look, suggesting a more cautious approach to cosmetic treatments.
The demand for whiter teeth continues to influence both consumer choices and insurance offerings. While professional treatments remain costly, supplemental plans are making them more accessible. Dentists still stress that long-term dental health should never be sacrificed for temporary cosmetic effects.
