Tests Conduct on Marine-Derived Sustainable Fuel by Airbus
In a bid to reduce its carbon footprint, Airbus has launched a test campaign to use renewable fuel in one of its vessels. The campaign, which started at the end of December 2022, is being carried out on the Saint-Nazaire-Tunis-Naples-Saint-Nazaire route.
The renewable fuel being used in the test campaign is not specifically detailed, but it is known that Airbus has been using biogas trucks for transporting aircraft sections and major components across its production sites in Europe since 2021. The renewable diesel fuel used in the test campaign is produced by Neste in Rotterdam and consists of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
The test campaign aims to evaluate the performance of the renewable fuel and the vessel's engine, with the ultimate goal of confirming how much the use of renewable fuel has been able to reduce CO emissions. Airbus aims to save around 6,000 tons of CO2 on this route alone in one year.
Airbus' ambition to reduce its carbon emissions is evident in its previous initiatives. The company has already introduced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its Beluga operations. The use of renewable fuel is expected to reduce CO emissions by up to 20% per trip compared to fossil fuel.
The test campaign is being operated by LDA, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, and is carrying major components for the A320 family between its production sites. The campaign will run for 18 months on the Saint-Nazaire-Tunis-Naples route.
Airbus is not limiting its efforts to reduce its carbon emissions to just aviation. The company is continuously introducing alternative energy solutions across the different transportation methods it uses: air, road, and maritime. By introducing renewable fuel on one of its vessels for sea transportation, Airbus is taking a significant step towards a greener future.
However, specific effectiveness data for the Saint-Nazaire-Tunis-Naples route would require official reports or press releases from Airbus or involved airlines, which are not available in the given search results. For more detailed insight, checking Airbus’ official communications or industry publications specializing in sustainable aviation fuel initiatives might provide a clearer picture.
