Tesla’s Stock Soars 1,790% in Six Years—But Volatility Stings New Buyers

Tesla’s stock performance over the past six years has far outpaced the broader stock market. Investors who held shares for multiple years saw returns reaching as high as 1,790%, while the S&P 500 delivered far more modest gains. However, recent volatility has also brought sharp declines for newer shareholders.

Those who bought Tesla shares three years ago, in November 2022, paid around $182.86 per share. By early 2025, their investment had grown by 131%, compared to the S&P 500’s 75.5% return over the same period. Investors from five years earlier, in November 2020, enjoyed a 122% gain, slightly ahead of the market’s 101% rise.

Tesla’s stock has shown extreme volatility alongside massive long-term growth. While recent buyers faced steep losses in early 2025, earlier investors benefited from returns far exceeding the broader stock market. The company’s market value and share price remain significantly higher than they were six years prior.
