Tesla's Robotaxi app launches in Texas with driverless Model Y rides

Tesla has officially expanded its ride-hailing reach by launching the Robotaxi app for Android users. The move brings the tech giant's vision of a personalized, driverless experience to a wider audience instead of just iPhone users, allowing anyone with a Tesla account to summon an autonomous vehicle directly from their smartphone.

The service currently operates using a fleet of specially configured Model Y vehicles. While the cars feature the familiar Tesla design, the experience is entirely different. Passengers are prohibited from sitting in the front-left seat, as the vehicle handles all driving tasks autonomously. The service is presently available in select Texas markets, including Austin, Dallas, and Houston, with operating hours running from 6 AM to 2 AM local time.

How the Robotaxi Experience Works

To use the service, riders must sign in to the app using their Tesla credentials. After entering a destination within the designated service area, the app provides an estimated fare and wait time. Once a ride is confirmed, the app tracks the vehicle's progress to the pickup point.

Entering the vehicle requires a simple tap in the app to start the ride. To ensure safety and efficiency, the Robotaxi will wait at the pickup location for seven minutes before the ride is subject to cancellation.

Personalized Comfort on the Go

One of the standout features of the platform is the level of customization available to passengers. Through either the app or the vehicle's touchscreen, riders can adjust climate settings, seat positioning, and stream music.

For existing Tesla owners, the transition is even smoother. The system automatically syncs driver profile settings and media preferences to the passenger profile, ensuring the car feels familiar the moment you step inside. These settings are saved and carry over to all future trips.

Safety and Support Features

Tesla has integrated several safety protocols into the autonomous experience. Riders have the ability to request the vehicle to pull over or stop at any time via the app or the touchscreen. In the event of an emergency or a need for assistance, a dedicated support button connects passengers to a customer service team through the vehicle's internal cabin microphone and speakers.

The app also serves as a hub for trip management, allowing users to reroute their destination mid-trip if plans change. For accessibility, the app is compatible with screen readers and supports a wide variety of languages, including Canadian French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

While the service is currently limited to specific regions and excludes passengers under the age of eight, the Android release marks a significant step in Tesla's push to make autonomous transport a daily reality.
