Tema’s Christmas Shoppers Choose Practicality Over Last-Minute Rush

Christmas shopping in Tema Metropolis is moving at a steady pace this year. Unlike previous seasons, the usual last-minute rush has given way to careful, measured purchases. Shoppers are focusing on essentials and reusing old decorations where possible.

Traders report stable but not exceptional sales. Rukaya Mohammed, a local seller, described business as average—neither struggling nor thriving. Customers are buying mostly Christmas lights and small artificial trees, though many need convincing before making a purchase.

Pricing varies across festive items. Light-up headbands sell for GH¢20, while non-lit versions cost GH¢15. Decorative knockouts range from GH¢1 per piece to GH¢5 for a pack. Shoppers are adopting a more cautious approach. Olivia Obesea, a resident, has scaled back her home decorations due to a busy schedule. Andy Appiah, another buyer, is reusing old items and only picking up a few new pieces.

The festive season in Tema is seeing fewer impulsive purchases. Many are prioritising practicality, sticking to basics and reusing what they already own. For traders, this means a quieter but consistent flow of sales.
