From August 1 at 12:01 a.m. to August 3 at 11:59 p.m., residents can enjoy tax-free shopping on a variety of items, including school supplies, clothing, and energy-efficient products.
During this period, items such as notebooks, pens, backpacks, binders, calculators, crayons, rulers, clothing, and footwear priced at $20 or less, and $100 or less respectively, will be exempt from state and local sales tax. Additionally, Energy Star™ and WaterSense™ products used for home or personal purposes priced at $2,500 or less, gas-powered chainsaws priced at $350 or less, and portable generators priced at $1,000 or less will also be included in the tax-free shopping event.
Hurricane and emergency/disaster preparedness products, generally priced $60 or less per item, are also covered under the tax holiday. Eligible emergency preparedness items include chainsaw accessories under $60 as well.
Items not included in the tax break are accessories such as handbags, jewelry, and cosmetics, protective sports gear and athletic footwear, any item priced above the specified limits, high-end electronics, and clothing accessories and sporting equipment.
Online, in-store, mail, or phone purchases qualify as long as the transaction occurs during the holiday timeframe. For a complete and detailed list, Virginia's official tax website provides additional FAQs and specifics.
The Virginia sales tax holiday is part of a series of relief efforts from the state aimed at helping families cope with rising costs. This year, the Commonwealth of Virginia is offering one-time tax rebates of up to $200 for single filers and up to $400 for married couples filing jointly. To be eligible for the 2025 rebate, you must file your 2024 Virginia income tax return by November 3, 2025.
The majority of payments are expected to be distributed by mid-October. Virginia residents can also receive one-time tax rebates of up to $400 this year.
As one of more than 17 states offering sales tax holidays this summer, the Old Dominion State is joining efforts to ease the financial burden on its residents. The Virginia Department of Taxation provides information on the rebate and answers to FAQs to help shoppers and businesses navigate what is, and isn't, included in the tax holiday. The actual amount of the rebate will depend on how much you owe in state taxes.
