There is vending machine over here, with a lot of snacks in it. It is operated by giving money in here, so that we can take the snacks and we get the snacks down here after giving money and selecting the snack, and in the background there is a wall and here is the window.

Food banks in Saxony faced mounting financial pressure in 2024 as costs for energy, rent, and transport climbed sharply. Despite receiving large-scale donations and volunteer support, the loss of a key warehouse in Dresden added to the strain on resources.

Across Saxony, nearly 900,000 collections took place at food distribution points this year. Over 1,000 volunteers worked tirelessly to rescue food and assist those in need. Their efforts helped manage the inflow of around 1,162 metric tons of donated goods from major industrial partners.

The closure of a warehouse in Dresden’s Ostragehege district dealt a significant blow, costing the organisation roughly €250,000. While sizable one-off donations provided temporary relief, they were not enough to cover ongoing structural shortfalls. A new logistics centre was established in 2024 to consolidate regional collection points, though its exact location remains undisclosed.

The rising expenses and loss of storage space have stretched Saxony’s food banks thin. Despite increased corporate donations and volunteer involvement, the system continues to rely on unstable funding. The need for long-term solutions remains urgent as demand for food aid grows.
