Sulfuric acid leak at Texas chemical plant sends two to hospital
A sulfuric acid leak at a chemical plant in Channelview caused disruption early Saturday morning. The incident occurred at LyondellBasell’s facility on Jacintoport Boulevard, prompting an emergency response from local authorities. Two people were hospitalised, while dozens more received treatment on-site for breathing difficulties.
The leak began after a catwalk collapsed at the plant, releasing sulfuric acid. Emergency crews, including the Channelview Fire Department and Harris County Hazmat, quickly arrived to contain the situation. Their efforts focused on cleaning up the spill and ensuring safety in the affected area.
In total, 38 individuals were treated at the scene for respiratory problems linked to the fumes. Two of those required further medical attention and were taken to hospital. Authorities confirmed that only the docked ships were temporarily restricted, with no wider risk to nearby residents or the public. LyondellBasell, a major chemical producer, operates the facility where the accident took place. The company has not yet released a statement on the cause of the catwalk failure or the extent of the damage.
Clean-up operations are now underway, led by specialist hazmat teams. The incident remains under investigation, with no immediate threat to surrounding communities. Both the injured workers and the facility’s operations will be monitored as recovery efforts continue.
