Retail Collapse: Last Breaths for Karstadt Galeria Kaufhof
In the harsh realm of business, survival becomes a steep challenge, and that's precisely the case for the department store chain Karstadt Galeria Kaufhof. The latest blow hits, as the retail giant teeters on the brink of collapse following a third insolvency. With 72 travel agencies already closed, the Neuss branch sat idle since last year, and the Essen headquarters claims a missing €50 million in promised liquidity from parent company Signa Retail Selection as the cause.
This insolvency leaves the conglomerate with over 120 branches in Germany hanging by a thread, and liquidation becomes a grim possibility if a solvent investor isn't found. Unfortunately, prospects for that savior seem rare in the current climate.
More than 10,000 employees' incomes are protected temporarily by insolvency benefits for three months. But this challenging situation isn't exclusive to Karstadt Galeria Kaufhof. It's reflective of a broader picture of economic vulnerability in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), with businesses and jobs growing progressively endangered.
The NRW Statistical State Office paints a grim picture; the number of employees affected by corporate insolvency spiked a staggering 19.4% in November 2023 compared to the previous year. Even though reported insolvencies decreased by 2.3%, the number of affected employees surged by 47.9% compared to October 2023.
The domino effect of insolvencies not only imperils businesses and jobs but also places their suppliers under pressure. Those who provided Karstadt Galeria Kaufhof without prepayment may face receiving a quota that hardly covers their costs, and the fund for paying insolvency benefits can hardly sustain such demand.
This situation in NRW mirrors a troubling trend across the region, evidenced by recent insolvency cases such as the Kabel Premium Pulp & Paper GmbH paper mill in Hagen, NRW, which filed for insolvency in early 2025.
