Stadler Rail wins €2B+ deal for Copenhagen’s driverless metro trains

Stadler Rail has secured a significant contract to deliver 226 driverless S-Bahn trains for Copenhagen's metro system. The deal, valued at several billion euros, is a substantial win for the Swiss manufacturer. Meanwhile, Stadler's shares have shown recent gains, closing at €21.40 on Friday.

The Copenhagen agreement comes after Stadler faced a setback in its home market. In November 2023, the firm lost a high-profile tender to Siemens for 116 double-decker trains with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Stadler later appealed the decision, creating legal uncertainty around the contract.

Despite the dispute, Stadler has continued expanding internationally. In Denmark, the company will collaborate with Siemens on the S-Bahn project, further solidifying its presence in automated rail systems. The deal also follows the recent unveiling of Stadler's KISS double-decker trains for Vienna's City Airport Train, set to commence operations in 2027. Investor confidence appears to be growing. Stadler's stock price recently surpassed its 100-day moving average, reflecting optimism about the firm's growth prospects beyond Switzerland.

The Copenhagen contract underscores Stadler Rail's competitiveness in global markets. Legal challenges in Switzerland remain unresolved, but the company's expansion into driverless trains and new partnerships indicate steady progress. The stock's upward trajectory suggests growing investor confidence in its long-term strategy.
