From 2026, still up to 30 jobs at Spreewald cucumber company - Spreewaldkonserve Shifts to Seasonal Pickle Production, Cuts Jobs

Spreewaldkonserve, a pickle manufacturer based in Golßen, has announced a significant shift in its business model. The company, which has been part of the French food conglomerate Andros since 2021, will now focus solely on pickles and operate on a seasonal basis. This change comes after the company's leadership determined that its previous model was no longer viable.

The shift to a seasonal model will see the company close its facility in Schöneiche and hire seasonal workers, primarily from Poland, during the harvest months of July and August starting in 2026. This move is expected to help the company reduce its losses, which totalled millions in recent years.

The change in business model will also lead to a reduction in the company's permanent workforce. Spreewaldkonserve previously announced plans to lay off around 200 permanent employees due to the financial struggles. However, the company has stated that it will continue to employ up to 30 people starting next year. Since 2021, Spreewaldkonserve has belonged to the Ostsee-Gruppe, which may provide some support during this transition.

The Spreewald pickles brand, which has been a protected designation within the European Union since 1999, will continue to be produced under the new seasonal model. The company aims to reduce its losses and maintain its presence in the market. The impact of these changes on the local economy and the affected employees will be closely watched in the coming months.
