South Korea's top officials reveal billions in personal wealth for 2024
South Korea's senior public officials have disclosed their latest asset declarations, revealing substantial personal wealth. A total of 1,903 high-ranking officials reported an average of 2.09 billion won in assets by the end of 2024. The figures highlight significant wealth among government leaders, with some holding far above the average. The asset declarations show a wide range of wealth among officials. The largest group, 616 individuals, held assets exceeding 2 billion won. Another 538 reported between 1 billion and 2 billion won, while 374 had assets ranging from 500 million to 1 billion won.
President Lee Jae-myung declared 4.97 billion won in assets, marking an increase of 1.88 billion won since his last disclosure. Meanwhile, Minister of SMEs and Startups Han Seong-sook disclosed the highest amount among officials, with 22.3 billion won in personal wealth. The Government Ethics Committee will review all declarations by June. If any discrepancies or irregularities are found, punitive measures will follow. The committee did not provide data on how these figures compare to previous years over the last five.
The latest disclosures confirm that senior officials in central and local governments hold considerable wealth. With an average exceeding 2 billion won, the figures reflect the financial standing of South Korea's public sector leaders. The Ethics Committee's upcoming review will determine whether any further action is required.
