SOM Convention 2025: Empowering Diversity in Mass-Tort Law

The 4th Annual Shades of Mass (SOM) convention concluded at the JW Marriott LA LIVE in Los Angeles, bringing together prominent civil-justice attorneys, judges, and policymakers. The event aimed to address systemic inequities and celebrate diversity in mass-tort and consumer-protection law.

Notable attendees included Larry Taylor, Diandra 'Fu' Dubrosse, Former SC Senator Marlon E. Kimpson, Priscilla Jimenez, Shreedhar Patel, LaRuby May, Gregory Cade, and Carl Solomon from the plaintiff bar. Judges such as Michelle Childs, William H. Orrick, David Cunningham, Philip S. Gutierrez (ret.), Denise Langford Morris (ret.), Vanessa Gilmore (ret.), Randa M. Trapp, and Glenda Sanders (ret.) were also present.

SOM's mission is to empower more Black and Brown attorneys to lead mass-tort and consumer-justice cases, ensuring balanced representation while holding corporations and insurers accountable. The convention discussed the lingering devastation from the 2025 Altadena wildfires and the need for accountability and community rebuilding.

Outgoing President Ben Crump was honored for his landmark work in representing families in high-profile cases. Ebony Thompson, Baltimore City Solicitor, revealed her new initiative to use blockchain technology to manage the city's blighted properties. Incoming President Navan Ward will assume leadership in 2026, continuing SOM's mission of mentorship and advocacy.

The 4th Annual Shades of Mass convention highlighted the importance of diversity and balanced representation in civil litigation. With the incoming leadership of Navan Ward, the organization looks forward to continuing its mission of empowering attorneys of color and advocating for communities affected by mass torts and consumer injustices.
