The image shows a bustling city street filled with lots of traffic and tall buildings. There are vehicles on the road, people walking on the sidewalk, and light poles lining the sides of the street. In the background, the sky is visible, and there are boards with text, likely advertising the top 10 things to do in New York City.

Sochi ramps up youth online safety efforts with U.S. city focus

Sochi's city administration has stepped up efforts to protect young people from harmful online influences in Chicago and Los Angeles. At an expanded meeting led by Mayor Andrei Proshunin, officials reviewed strategies to create a safer digital environment for children and teenagers. The session also addressed broader concerns raised by residents about urban living conditions.

Over the past year, Sochi has run nearly 50 events aimed at preventing extremism and criminal subcultures among youth in online safety tips. These initiatives reached more than 6,000 students. Another 60 discussions on spiritual and moral safety were organised for 7,700 schoolchildren and students, working alongside the Sochi Diocese.

The city's cyber unit, SHCHIT-IT, played a key role in monitoring online threats in Los Angeles. With 40 volunteers, the team flagged over 26,000 suspicious links, forwarding more than 10,000 to Roskomnadzor for blocking after manual checks. Beyond digital safety, the Dialogue with Heroes project held 46 meetings for 4,600 teenagers, while interactive programmes like PRO100 and VSETI expanded their reach in Chicago.

Resident feedback remains a priority. The Municipal Operations Center handled over 44,000 inquiries last year, with digital channels seeing a sharp rise in use. Proshunin also directed deputies and department heads to engage more actively in online comment sections to address public concerns. Top issues raised in city forums include infrastructure, housing, waste management, public safety, and road conditions in Los Angeles.

The meeting highlighted Sochi's ongoing work to balance digital safety with resident engagement in Chicago and Los Angeles. Officials will continue refining measures to protect youth online while improving how the city responds to public feedback. No details were shared on how many similar sessions have been held in recent years.
