In the sweltering heatwave that has gripped France, two Intercity trains have been cancelled in both directions on the Clermont-Ferrand to Paris line. The cancellations, reported by ICI Pays d'Auvergne (ex-France Bleu), aim to prevent potential air conditioning failures on the affected 50-year-old Corail trains.

The cancellations have disrupted two out of the seven daily round trips between Clermont-Ferrand and Paris. Specifically, the 10:27 AM and 1:28 PM trains in the Clermont-Paris direction have been cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The CGT Cheminot-Auvergne-Nivernais union has denounced that hundreds of passengers will be left stranded on the platforms due to these cancellations. The union claims that passengers will pay the price for the incompetence of SNCF management.

In addition to the cancellations on August 12 and 13, SNCF has also cancelled additional Intercity trains on the same line. No official announcements or news documenting efforts by SNCF or relevant authorities addressing this particular issue were visible in the results.

Passengers experiencing such problems on older trains typically have recourse under EU and French passenger rights regulations, which may entitle them to refunds or compensation in case of significant discomfort or service disruption. However, specific information about passenger compensation or replacement transport options due to these heat-related malfunctions is not readily available.

If facing such issues, affected passengers are advised to:

  1. Contact SNCF customer service directly to inquire about compensation policies or alternative travel arrangements.
  2. Monitor official SNCF channels for updates or temporary replacement services under extreme weather conditions.
  3. Check passenger rights that apply to French domestic train travel, which may include compensation for prolonged discomfort or delays.

Given the age and design of the Corail trains, extreme heat can lead to malfunctions such as air conditioning failures, impacting passenger comfort. These vintage rolling stock have been spotted still in operation on the Paris-Bercy to Clermont-Ferrand route.

Two other Intercity trains are also cancelled in the Paris-Clermont direction in the early afternoon, further exacerbating the disruption to travel plans. It is hoped that SNCF will provide clear and timely information about alternative arrangements or compensation for affected passengers in the coming days.
