Hold Up on Pforzheim's Detention Center Expansion! Delay Pushes Back Completion Until 2027

**Sustained setback in extending detention facilities for immigration purposes** - Significant slowdown in the growth of the immigrant detention facility

Got some not-so-great news for you, huh? The expansion of the old Pforzheim Detention Center ain't happening as planned. Despite all the hype, we're looking at spring 2027 now for the long-awaited expansion to 80 detention spots. According to the Ministry of Justice's spokesperson, it's mainly due to unforeseen snafus during planning and construction on the existing site. Work's also being done while the facility's still operational, and contracted planning firms ain't quite living up to expectations. By fall this year, at least there'll be 68 detention spots, the Ministry of Finance's spokesperson said.

Originally meant to wrap up ages ago, this renovation project's been delay-city. The detention center opened its doors in 2016 with 36 spots and expanded to 51 mid-2019. The Ministry of Finance mentioned it'll set you back over 13 million euros - initially, only 9 million were planned for the purpose.

The place is usually packed, and with the overall increase in deportations in southwestern Germany, it's busier than ever. According to the Ministry of Justice, the occupancy rate's higher than last year. In May, there were 45 folks staying there every day, maxing out the facility, accounting for reservations. Since the start of 2022, the center's been running at full capacity without a break. Whether any deportations have been postponed due to a lack of space, they don't record that.

On April 30, around 23,700 folks in Baden-Württemberg were awaiting deportation. But their deportation's been put on hold due to temporary suspensions on deportations to countries like Syria.

By May 31, about 1,580 people had been deported from southwestern Germany. Comparing to the same period last year, that's a whopping 450 more!
