Headline: Maryland's Mountee Brown, a Greedy Bank Teller, Caught Stealing Over $250k from Elderly Clients
Sub-Headline: The former bank employee, along with his co-conspirators, defrauded elderly clients by falsifying transactions and depositing the loot into his personal account.
May 4, 2025:A 27-year-old ex-bank teller in Maryland, Mountee Brown, has admitted to purloining $255,000 from his employer's patrons, primarily octogenarians.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland stated that Brown has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in connection with a scheme to pilfer funds from clients at a Clinton, Maryland, bank.
An intricate scheme involving Brown and at least two associates was targeted against five victims. Four of these victims were over 80 years old.
Brown leveraged his position to seize control of the victims' accounts and had accomplices feigning as clients to orchestrate 26 unauthorized withdrawals. Brown sanctioned these transactions and reported them as having been done by 'known clients.'
As per the Department of Justice, the co-conspirators set their plan in motion on October 21, 2022. On that day, Co-conspirator #1, an imposter, entered the bank and approached Brown. Brown knew that Co-conspirator #1 was not the real client, Victim #1. Yet, Brown and Co-conspirator #1 executed a $10,000 cash withdrawal from Victim #1's account without the client's knowledge. Brown documented the cash withdrawal by falsely reporting that he had verified the client, that the client was a 'known client,' and that the client was known by Brown's supervisor. Co-conspirator #1 forged Victim #1's signature on the withdrawal slip.
Brown repeated the scheme multiple times, and made deposits of approximately $30,200 into his personal account at another financial institution, and the duo and their co-conspirators made off with at least $255,000 in funds.
