Search intensifies for missing retired Air Force colonel Larry McCasland

A search continues for Larry McCasland, a retired US Air Force colonel who vanished from his New Mexico home in late February. Authorities have deployed helicopters, drones and search dogs but face challenges due to rugged terrain and warm weather. His disappearance has left family and investigators concerned, especially after reports of 'mental fog' before he went missing.

McCasland, 73, was last seen on 27 February when he left his home without his phone or wearable devices—something his family described as out of character. A Silver Alert was issued shortly after, urging the public to stay vigilant given his age and reported confusion.

Search teams have scoured a wide area, using infrared-equipped helicopters at night, though high temperatures made heat signatures hard to detect. Dogs, drones, and ground crews have also been deployed, but difficult terrain and shifting weather have slowed progress. Several items linked to McCasland have been found, including a light green long-sleeve shirt and hiking boots at his second home in Colorado. A gray US Air Force sweatshirt was also discovered near his New Mexico residence, though its connection to him remains unconfirmed. However, his wallet, a .38-caliber revolver, a leather holster, and a red backpack are still missing. Authorities have asked residents and businesses to check surveillance footage from 27 and 28 February, focusing on the window between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the 27th. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office has received 74 tips so far, excluding those sent to the FBI, and continues reviewing video evidence.

The search for McCasland remains active, with investigators following leads and analysing footage. His family and law enforcement are urging anyone with information to come forward. The missing items and unusual circumstances of his disappearance add to the urgency of the case.
