Scotland invests £6M to expand offshore wind and maritime projects in key regions
The Scottish Government has announced £6 million in funding to boost offshore wind and maritime projects in the Inner Moray Firth and Stornoway. The investment aims to strengthen clean energy infrastructure while creating jobs in key regions.
Two major sites will benefit: the Arnish yard in Stornoway and the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility near Inverness.
A total of £3.9 million will go towards developing the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility. This site will support both fixed and floating offshore wind projects, positioning it as a key hub in the renewable energy supply chain. Ian Cobban, interim chief executive of Haventus, highlighted Ardersier's future role in serving a growing national and global industry.
At the Arnish yard, £2.05 million has been allocated to Navantia UK for expanding its facilities. The company's CEO, Donato Martinez, confirmed the funds will speed up upgrades needed for offshore wind and energy projects. An additional £965,000 will cover pre-construction work at the same site. The investment in Arnish is expected to create over 75 new jobs, increasing the workforce from around 150 to 250 within the next decade. Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes stated that these projects will drive growth in Scotland's clean energy sector while supporting employment in Stornoway and Ardersier.
The funding will help modernise key infrastructure and expand Scotland's offshore wind capabilities. With job creation already projected at Arnish, the projects aim to strengthen the country's position in renewable energy. No specific job estimates have been given for the Inner Moray Firth developments by 2030.
