Winter is Coming - Road Maintenance Crews are Prepared - Schleswig-Holstein's Roads Ready for Winter: Salt Stockpiled, Fleet Mobilized

Schleswig-Holstein's road authorities are well-prepared for the upcoming winter season. The State Office for Road Construction and Transport (LBV.SH) has made arrangements to reuse and reorder salt, while Autobahn GmbH has secured significant supplies. Together, they ensure the safety of roads across the region.

LBV.SH can reuse and reorder salt from previous winters, aiming to be efficient with resources. The North Branch of Autobahn GmbH has already stockpiled 18,000 tons of salt for the winter service. Additionally, Autobahn GmbH has contractually secured 20,000 tons of salt and 2,700 tons of brine for the North Branch, ensuring sufficient supplies for the season.

The LBV.SH, responsible for federal, state, and certain county roads, has a fleet of 326 snow plows and gritters, 28 snow blowers, 25 Unimogs, and 171 trucks from private contractors to tackle the winter. This extensive fleet is supported by an annual average salt consumption of 19,200 tons over the past five years. County authorities handle county roads not operated by LBV.SH, and municipalities manage municipal roads.

With the winter service cost for LBV.SH reaching around 7.4 million euros in the winter of 2024/25, the region's road authorities are committed to maintaining safe driving conditions. By efficiently managing resources and securing adequate supplies, they are well-equipped to face the challenges of the upcoming winter season.
