Saxony’s leader demands EU climate policy overhaul to save jobs and industry
Michael Kretschmer, Saxony’s Minister President and a leading voice within the CDU, has urged a major overhaul of the EU’s climate policies. He argues that current emission targets and carbon pricing are placing unbearable pressure on households and industries—particularly in regions like Saxony.
His calls come as he warns of economic risks, including job losses and deindustrialisation, if the existing rules remain unchanged.
Kretschmer has repeatedly criticised the EU’s emissions trading system (ETS), insisting that the CO₂ price must be lowered to ease the burden on businesses and citizens. He claims the current level threatens energy-intensive industries and risks pushing jobs out of Saxony. Instead, he demands greater national flexibility in setting carbon costs.
The CDU politician has also taken aim at the EU’s 2040 target of a 90% emissions cut, calling it too rigid. He argues that such strict goals leave no room for adjustment in housing, energy, or industrial policies. As an alternative, he proposes a less ambitious 80% reduction by 2050 rather than the current 100% net-zero pledge. On domestic policy, Kretschmer has criticised the federal government’s proposed industrial electricity price. He argues it fails to address grid fees, creating further financial strain for companies. Despite his push for cheaper energy solutions, he has ruled out reviving Russian gas imports as an option. His warnings extend to broader economic consequences. Kretschmer claims the current climate deadlines are unrealistic and could trigger deindustrialisation across Europe if left unchecked.
Kretschmer’s demands centre on lowering CO₂ costs, relaxing emission targets, and giving member states more control over climate policies. He insists these changes are necessary to protect jobs and prevent economic decline in industrial regions. The debate now shifts to whether the EU will reconsider its approach in response to such criticism.
