A broad alliance of over 810 municipalities in Saxony has called for major reforms to strengthen local self-governance. The nonpartisan group, known as Allianz für Sachsen (Alliance for Saxony), is pushing for financial independence, less bureaucracy, and a shift away from rigid state oversight. Their demands come ahead of a key vote on a special fund for towns and villages before the upcoming state election.
The Allianz für Sachsen, operating under the slogan 'Now We're Speaking Up', has released a detailed plan for modernising local government. Their proposals include creating a state commission to tackle red tape, secure long-term finance, and reduce unnecessary regulations. The alliance argues that current rules often create distrust and inefficiency rather than supporting effective governance.
The group's paper outlines four core requests: less bureaucracy, clearer responsibilities, greater trust in local decision-making, and stable financial support. They also want a reform of the federal-state fiscal equalisation system, giving municipalities more control over their budgets. These changes aim to revive local self-governance by letting councils manage their duties without excessive state interference.
A special fund for municipalities is expected to be approved in the final plenary session before the state election. The alliance hopes this will mark the first step toward broader reforms, ensuring towns and villages have the resources and freedom to meet their communities' needs.
