Willingmann for socially just, open-minded Saxony-Anhalt - Saxony-Anhalt SPD targets affordable living and jobs in election push
The SPD in Saxony-Anhalt is finalising its election platform ahead of the September 6 vote. Armin Willingmann, the party's top candidate, has placed affordable living and well-paid jobs at the centre of his campaign. His warnings about the AfD's growing influence have also sparked debate in the run-up to the election.
Willingmann has clashed with coalition partners over key policies. He dismissed the CDU's target of over 8,000 police officers as unrealistic, despite recent recruitment efforts. Data shows police dog deployments in the state hit around 1,900 operations in 2025, with tracking dogs used most often. However, filling training positions remains difficult, as many applicants lack the necessary qualifications.
The SPD's platform focuses on easing financial pressures for families. Proposals include cutting VAT on staple foods, reducing childcare fees, and making daycare tuition-free. The party also wants full state funding for school supplies to ensure equal access to education. On energy and wages, the SPD is pushing for a fair transition to affordable heating and renewable power. Willingmann has repeatedly warned that an AfD victory could harm Saxony-Anhalt's economy. His campaign stresses stability, fair wages, and long-term investment in the region. Recruitment challenges persist for the state police, even with an 11% rise in applicants since 2020. Officials cite competition from other careers as a hurdle, particularly among younger candidates. Currently, 83 service dogs and 77 handlers are active, but training gaps remain due to qualification shortfalls.
The SPD will present its final election programme soon, with Willingmann leading the push for economic fairness and public sector reform. If elected, the party plans to implement tax cuts, education funding, and energy policies aimed at lowering household costs. The outcome of the September vote will determine whether these proposals move forward.
