Samyang Foods Launches Plant-Based Innovation Hub in the Netherlands
Samyang Foods has announced plans to open a new research and development hub in Wageningen, Netherlands. The facility will focus on plant-based and functional foods, aiming to advance healthier food technologies. The move comes as the company expands its global innovation efforts in the food sector.
The Netherlands was selected as the European base for its strong reputation in food technology and supportive government policies. Wageningen, in particular, was chosen for its well-established industrial and academic networks, including ties with Wageningen University & Research. The hub will not operate as a local subsidiary but as an overseas research base for Samyang Foods.
The new centre will collaborate with Samyang Foods Europe, the company's existing sales subsidiary in Amsterdam. Its key activities will include tech scouting, joint research, material testing, talent acquisition, and exploring emerging food trends. A major focus will be on developing plant proteins and other innovative solutions for more functional plant-based products. This initiative aligns with broader trends in food policy. The Dutch government has set a target for protein consumption to be split equally between plant-based and animal-derived sources by 2030. Meanwhile, the Health Council of the Netherlands recently updated dietary guidelines, recommending reduced red meat intake in favour of plant-based alternatives. South Korea, too, is advancing its own national action plan for plant-based foods, positioning itself as a growing hub for future food innovation in Asia.
The Wageningen hub will strengthen Samyang Foods' research capabilities in plant-based and functional foods. By leveraging local expertise and partnerships, the company aims to accelerate the development of healthier food technologies. The facility is expected to play a key role in meeting evolving dietary guidelines and market demands.
