Ryder System Soars 25% in 2025 While U-Haul Plummets Under Veteran CEO

The S&P 500 industrials sector has surged this year, climbing 18.2% and outperforming the wider market. Within cargo transportation, performance has varied sharply, with some stocks soaring while others struggle. Ryder System leads the sector, but U-Haul has faced steep declines under its long-serving CEO.

Ryder System stands out as the top performer in 2025, gaining 25.59% year-to-date. J.B. Hunt Transport Services follows with a 15.45% rise, while XPO has added 6.82%. These gains contrast with broader sector trends, where Full Truck Alliance and Knight-Swift Transportation have seen modest increases of 3.60% and 1.07% respectively.

At the other end of the scale, U-Haul Holding has suffered the steepest drop, falling 25.88% so far this year. The company, led by 75-year-old CEO Edward Joseph Shoen, holds a 'Sell' Quant rating of 1.54. Shoen, who also serves as chairman and president, received $1 million in compensation last year. The industrials sector’s overall growth of 18.2% places it third among all S&P 500 sectors, comfortably ahead of the broader index’s performance.

The gap between the best and worst performers in cargo transportation remains wide. Ryder System’s strong gains highlight investor confidence in certain logistics firms, while U-Haul’s decline reflects ongoing challenges. The sector’s overall growth still outpaces the wider market, but individual results show sharp differences.
