Russia's housing scheme helps young families buy their first home

Russia's Young Family programme is helping young couples and single parents buy or build their first home. The scheme covers 30% to 35% of housing costs, depending on whether the applicants have children.

Part of the broader Housing and Urban Environment initiative, the subsidy aims to make modern, comfortable housing more affordable for those under 35.

To qualify, applicants must be officially married couples or single parents with at least one child. Both spouses—or the single parent—must be 35 or younger when applying. They must also prove they need better living conditions and can afford the remaining mortgage payments.

The subsidy amount is based on the average housing cost in their region, not current market prices. Childless couples receive 30% of this calculated cost, while families with children get 35%.

The process starts with a visit to the local administration for guidance. Applicants then apply for 'needy' status, register for the programme, and wait for approval. Once accepted, they can use the subsidy to purchase an apartment or fund construction. Participants can track their place in the queue through their local administration's website.

The programme provides direct financial support to young families struggling with housing costs. By covering a significant portion of expenses, it reduces the burden of mortgages and construction loans. Exact figures on how many families have benefited since its launch remain unavailable.
