Russians prioritize affordability but crave modern homes and suburban living
More than half of Russians still prioritise price when choosing a home, according to a recent survey. Yet many are also looking for modern features and better living conditions. Over the next three years, a significant number plan to move or upgrade their housing—with a strong preference for areas outside busy cities.
The study reveals that 54% of respondents rank cost as the most important factor in housing decisions. However, other considerations are gaining ground. Transport links matter to 51% of people, while 45% want well-developed local infrastructure.
For those actively planning a move, infrastructure (35%) and environmental quality (22%) top the list. Meanwhile, 63% of Russians are thinking about changing or improving their homes within the next three years. Of these, 25% already have firm plans, and another 37% are weighing their options. Digital features are becoming essential for many. Among those planning to relocate, 78% want smart technology in their new homes. Security systems (63%) and smart home functions (49%) are the most sought-after upgrades. The trend towards suburban living is clear. A majority—67%—of potential movers are looking beyond city limits. Suburban neighbourhoods (40%) and country houses (32%) are the preferred choices. Expectations have also risen: 75% of recent buyers say they now demand more from their homes than they did three years ago.
The findings highlight a shift in housing priorities among Russians. While affordability remains key, there is growing interest in modern amenities, green spaces, and suburban living. With more people planning to relocate or upgrade, the demand for well-connected, tech-equipped homes outside cities is likely to increase.
