Rohini Nilekani named India’s Most Generous Woman of 2025 for transformative giving
Rohini Nilekani, chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and director of EkStep, has been named India's Most Generous Woman of the Year 2025 by the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List. Her significant contributions, totalling ₹763 crore over five years, have made her one of India's most impactful philanthropists.
Nilekani's philanthropic journey began in 2001 when she founded Arghyam, an organisation dedicated to water and sanitation, with a personal endowment of ₹150 crore. She has since supported numerous causes, including gender equity, education, climate resilience, justice, governance, and strengthening civil society.
In 2013, alongside her husband Nandan Nilekani, she donated ₹50 crore to the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) to establish the new India Center. The couple's generosity extended to Bengaluru's NIMHANS in 2025, with a donation of ₹100 crore to support mental health research and treatment. In the same year, Nilekani donated ₹204 crore, focusing on social innovation and systemic transformation.
Rohini Nilekani's philanthropic efforts, spanning over two decades, have left a substantial impact on various sectors in India. Her dedication to improving lives through strategic giving has earned her the prestigious title of India's Most Generous Woman of the Year 2025.
