Rhineland-Main Transport Association (RMV) and North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) Celebrate Milestones and Plan Future Growth in Public Transport
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV), a significant milestone for public transportation (PT) in Hesse. Founded in 1995, RMV, along with its counterpart, the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV), revolutionized the region's transport landscape by unifying previously disjointed tariffs and schedules.
When RMV launched with the slogan "One timetable, one ticket, one price," it heralded a new era for public transport in the Rhine-Main area. This model was later replicated nationwide with the introduction of the Germany Ticket, making PT more accessible to a broader population.
Last year, the RMV reached a record-breaking 825 million passengers, an achievement that Knut Ringat, CEO of the Rhine-Main Transport Association, considers will continue in the future. He attributes this growth to numerous construction projects currently underway, which he terms "the decade of construction." Despite delays and disruptions in rail traffic, Ringat remains optimistic about upcoming improvements in signal box staffing and modernization efforts.
However, securing funding from the federal and state governments is crucial for ordering additional trains following the expansion. Ringat emphasizes that they need more funding than before to accommodate price increases and make public transport more enjoyable for passengers. Rural mobility solutions, such as on-demand traffic, are also on the agenda, with autonomous vehicles already being piloted in partnership with Deutsche Bahn.
In Kassel, the North Hessian Transport Association has focused on expanding bus traffic and achieving "Every Village - Every Hour" as its primary goal. This initiative, combined with the Germany Ticket, has led to a 10.3% increase in passengers in regional bus traffic. However, the focus on rural areas means that NVV requires increased funding from the federal and state governments to facilitate further expansion.
Both RMV and NVV are planning for future growth, particularly in response to rising demand and the impact of the Germany Ticket. Central to these plans are improved sustainability efforts, autonomous mobility solutions, and continued investments in rural mobility.
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the RMV will host invited guests at the Römer in Frankfurt on 28th May and launch various campaigns, actions, and prize draws for passengers throughout the summer. The NVV will also run a campaign titled "You're the Best," complete with a prize draw, on the same day, with a major celebration planned for September.
Unification, innovation, and targeted expansion have shaped the public transportation landscape in Hesse, and both RMV and NVV are poised to continue this trajectory, provided that adequate funding is secured. The associations' long-term goals include greater digitalization, eco-friendly policies, and continued rural connectivity.
Vocational training programs are being considered by the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV) and North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) to foster skills development within their industries, aiming to create a more talented and efficient workforce for public transport. finance and transportation sectors will play significant roles in supporting the growth and modernization initiatives of both associations, requiring substantial investments and partnerships.
In an effort to accommodate rising demand, expand rural mobility solutions, and achieve greater sustainability in public transport, both RMV and NVV seek funding from the federal and state governments for infrastructure projects, subsidized fares, and eco-friendly technologies. Industry and transportation collaborations will be crucial in funding these endeavors, ensuring the associations' continued growth and success in the coming years.
