Celebrating Three Decades of Public Transport Evolution: A Look at RMV and NVV's Achievements and Plans

In the wake of the Germany Ticket's introduction, public transportation in Hesse, Germany, is experiencing a transformation, driven by the ongoing efforts of Rhein-Main Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and Nordhessischer Verkehrsverbund (NVV) transport associations.

Embarking on a new era

Thirty years ago, the landscape of public passenger transport (ÖPNV) was vastly different. The establishment of RMV and NVV in 1995 marked a turning point in Hesse. By merging disparate fare and schedule systems, the transport associations facilitated a significant increase in passenger numbers. As Knut Ringat, CEO of RMV, explains, "The slogan was 'One timetable, one ticket, one fare' when the RMV was launched." This measure, foreshadowing the nationwide Germany Ticket rollout, encouraged a surge of passengers to opt for public transportation.

Last year, RMV reported a record number of 825 million passengers, a feat achieved amid staffing challenges, construction delays, and the rise of remote work. This trend is set to continue, according to Ringat.

Navigating the present challenges

In spite of the delays and cancellations caused by numerous construction projects in the RMV area, Ringat is optimistic about the future. He terms the current period as "the decade of construction," stating, "The situation will not change in the next five years; it may even worsen at times. We have to get through these five years. Afterwards, we will be able to offer a much better service."

To address the criticism about staff shortages in control centers, Ringat expects improvements this year. Deutsche Bahn has bolstered training programs and modernized control centers to address these concerns.

Emphasizing funding as a key factor

The increased funding from the federal and state governments is crucial for ordering additional trains post-expansion, as Ringat notes, "We need more than before, because we also have to compensate for price increases. We have no further savings potential."

Connecting rural regions

On-demand transport, which allows residents to schedule pick-ups, is a focus for RMV. Already implemented within the association, autonomous vehicles are the future goal, with a pilot project in Darmstadt and Offenbach district underway.

Moving forward for NVV

For the North Hessian Transport Association based in Kassel, where the area is less urbanized, public transport in rural areas is the dominant theme. The association has recently expanded its offerings, especially in bus traffic, making every village reachable at least once per hour. This, coupled with the Germany Ticket, has resulted in increased demand.

UVV's spokesperson highlights that dependable and sufficient government funding is crucial for providing a good offer in both urban and rural areas. Additional funding is necessary for further expansions.

A call for improvement in punctuality and reliability

According to Managing Director Marian Volmer, improvement in punctuality and reliability is essential. The new federal government's investment program is being hoped to provide additional funds for infrastructure improvements in North Hesse's rail network, railway stations, and road construction.

Celebrating milestones

Both RMV and NVV are marking their respective anniversaries this year. RMV will host an event at the Römer in Frankfurt on May 28th, while NVV will launch a passenger campaign titled "You're the Best." Additional campaigns and prize draws are planned for the summer, with a major celebration in September.

  1. In light of the expansion and modernization efforts carried out by EC countries' transport associations, such as RMV and NVV, there is a growing need for investment in vocational training programs for the transportation industry, particularly in the areas of finance and engineering, to ensure the timely completion of projects and the efficient operation of public transportation systems.
  2. As EC countries' transport associations, like RMV and NVV, continue to grow and evolve, it is essential that they collaborate with regional industries and financial institutions to secure funding for the implementation of innovative transportation solutions, such as on-demand services and autonomous vehicles, that will improve both urban and rural transportation networks.
