Few Municipalities Without Approved Budgets - Rhineland-Palatinate's Municipalities Face Severe Financial Crisis
Rhineland-Palatinate's municipalities face a severe financial crisis. In the first half of 2025, they've incurred a financing shortfall of approximately 1.57 billion euros. Notably, 49 municipalities still lack an approved budget for the current year.
The affected towns are predominantly small, struggling with declining tax revenues and increased expenditures. This has led to a significant rise in the shortfall compared to the previous year—nearly 956 million euros more. The federal government's special fund for infrastructure and climate protection is intended for investments, not plugging these budget gaps.
Across the state, 49 municipalities remain without approved budgets. This represents around 2% of the total 2,535 municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate. The names of these 49 municipalities are not currently available, but the total number is confirmed.
The financial strain on Rhineland-Palatinate's municipalities is severe and worsening. With a substantial budget shortfall and many towns still without approved budgets, urgent action is needed to address this crisis.
