Retirees lose £65,000 after builder abandons botched home renovation nightmare

Tony and Sue Wade planned a peaceful retirement in Cambridgeshire after moving to the countryside. Their dream turned into a nightmare when a builder left their home in ruins and stole £65,000 meant for renovations. What should have taken two months dragged on for over three years.

The couple hired 'BSW Construction Projects' through Checkatrade in 2019. They paid £37,000 upfront for a garage conversion, expecting a new kitchen, dining room, and shower. Instead, the builders repeatedly failed to turn up and lacked basic construction skills.

The project collapsed after the builder admitted diverting the money to another job. The Wades were left with 35 defects, including a poorly built garage, a half-demolished conservatory, and widespread issues inside the house. For two winters, parts of their home had no heating due to the shoddy work. Checkatrade later offered the couple £1,000 in compensation—just a fraction of their losses. The builder's company, BSW Construction Projects, was removed from Checkatrade in 2022. By 2026, no records of new projects, legal action, or even the firm's continued existence could be found.

The Wades lost £65,000 and endured years of stress from the botched renovations. Their home remains damaged, and the builder's company appears to have vanished. No further action against the firm has been publicly documented.
