Retiree Wins Court Dispute Over Small Amount - Retiree Wins Court Dispute Over Small Amount
A Czech pensioner has won a legal battle over a tiny pension increase—just four cents. The Supreme Administrative Court in Brno ruled in his favour after spotting a rounding error by the pension authority. Though his name remains undisclosed, the case has drawn attention for its unusual details.
The dispute began when the pensioner challenged a 2.3% rise in his monthly payment. Instead of rounding up to the nearest whole crown, the authority only used the first two decimal places. This left his pension at 263 crowns per month rather than the 264 crowns he believed he was owed.
The court agreed with the pensioner’s argument, confirming the miscalculation. As a result, the pension insurance agency must now pay his legal fees of around 5,070 crowns (about €209).
The ruling sets a precedent that could influence future pension disputes. Any similar cases involving rounding errors may now face closer scrutiny. For now, the pensioner’s victory stands—over a difference of just four cents.
