Residents of Abuja's Wuse Zone 6 Protest Destruction of Green Spaces
Residents of Wuse Zone 6 in Abuja are up in arms against a development they fear will have grave environmental consequences. Green spaces, intended for recreation and to protect underground utilities, are being converted for construction, violating the Abuja Master Plan.
The Wuse Zone 6 Neighbourhood Residents Association has called on President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders to halt the ongoing conversion of green areas. Residents worry that this will worsen flooding, increase heat, and reduce air quality in the neighbourhood. They have already faced issues like burst water pipes and blocked sewer lines.
Almost all designated green areas in Wuse Zone 6 have been sold and cleared for new construction. Many reserved sites are now being fenced, cleared, and built upon. The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Development Control Authority are urged to intervene and enforce the Abuja Master Plan. Residents are pleading with the FCT Minister, Nyesome Wike, and President Bola Tinubu to intervene and halt the development. The Abuja Master Plan deliberately preserved green areas to protect underground utility corridors and spaces for recreation.
The ongoing construction in Wuse Zone 6 could turn one of Abuja's most planned neighbourhoods into a hotbed of flooding, pollution, and infrastructure failure. Residents hope that the FCTA, as the responsible body, will step in to prevent this and uphold the Abuja Master Plan.
