Renault, Nissan, and Mitsubishi alliance progressing with the launch of collaborative initiatives at the Ampere Douai Factory

The automotive industry is witnessing a significant shift towards electric vehicles, and the Douai plant in France is at the forefront of this change. On September 16, 2025, a notable meeting of the Alliance Board took place at this plant, attended by key figures from the Renault Group, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Alpine.

Jean-Dominique Senard, the Chairman of the Renault Group, was present at the meeting. Interestingly, he was the only chairman in attendance, as there is no other chairman named in the search results for that event. Joining him were Ivan Espinosa, CEO of Nissan, and Takao Kato, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors, who made their first visit to Douai on that day.

The strategic partnership between Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Ampere is evident in their choice of Ampere as the partner for their latest electric models. This collaboration is set to bear fruit with the release of the A290 electric vehicle, scheduled for Alpine in 2024.

The Douai plant, which produced 50,729 units in 2023, is expected to see a significant increase in production to 89,527 units in 2024. This surge is partly due to the production of six electric models for four clients: Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Alpine.

Renault is set to release the 100% electric Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech Electric, and R5 E-Tech Electric in 2022, 2024, and 2024, respectively. Nissan, on the other hand, unveiled the all-new Nissan Micra in May, with a scheduled release in late 2025. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, the brand's first full-electric SUV for Europe, will also be produced at the Douai plant and is scheduled for release in late 2025.

The Douai plant switched to 100% electric vehicle production in May 2023, following a €550 million investment to build a new flexible standard line equipped with two modular platforms, Ampr Small (segment A/B) and Ampr Medium (segment C), for electric vehicle production.

A new workshop for assembling batteries has been established at the Douai plant, further enhancing its capabilities in electric vehicle production. Ampere is also preparing to manufacture the all-new Nissan Micra and the next-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross.

The Douai plant's ability to manufacture six electric vehicles across four distinct brands demonstrates a high degree of flexibility and brand-specific customization. This collaboration is part of the Alliance's commitment to deliver electric vehicles tailored to European customers.
