Regular service anticipated on Eurostar by Tuesday morning, according to SNCF, following power disruption
In July 2024, one of Europe's busiest international railway routes was hit by a significant disruption. The cause was a major power failure in the Rotterdam Willemsspoortunnel, which affected southbound train traffic from Rotterdam, severely impacting both domestic and international trains, including Eurostar routes that had to be rerouted or terminated early. This power outage led to significant delays, cancellations, and route changes for passengers traveling through Rotterdam to London and other destinations [1].
The disruption was not limited to July. In early August, Eurostar services also faced power outages on the French high-speed network near Moussy, northern France, causing further cancellations and delays due to an electrical fault on the track between Moussy and Longueil [2][5]. This incident added to the disruption of Eurostar connections between Paris, London, Brussels, and Amsterdam during the peak holiday season.
The power outage in July affected at least 17 Eurostar services, causing the closure of a critical section of the rail network north of Paris and suspending TGV lines in northern France until further notice. Eurostar trains to and from Charles De Gaulle Airport were also affected by the power outage [2].
In a bid to ease overcrowding due to the current disruption, Eurostar is allowing passengers at St Pancras to board 30 minutes earlier. However, Eurostar warns passengers to cancel or postpone journeys due to the cable theft causing major disruption [3].
The disruption in March was due to an unexploded WWII bomb found at Paris' Gare du Nord station, which affected Eurostar services between Brussels, Amsterdam, and London [4]. In June, Eurostar passengers faced days of major delays and cancellations after two people died on the track in France and then cables were stolen near Lille [6]. Local RER trains were still operating, but trains south, west, and east of Paris were affected and operating with delays or cancellations.
Looking back, in July last year, SNCF experienced several acts of malevolence that involved deliberate fires along several high-speed lines, causing service disruptions and affecting around 800,000 passengers [7].
In response to the current disruptions, SNCF Voyageurs advises passengers to postpone their trip if possible, but they can also exchange tickets free of charge or request a full refund [3].
On a positive note, new Eurostar services will whisk passengers from the UK to cities in Germany and Switzerland [8].

- The power failure in the Rotterdam Willemsspoortunnel, which affected southbound train traffic in July 2024, not only disrupted domestic and international trains but also impacted the finance industry, as it led to significant losses for travel businesses and caused financial hardship for passengers.
- The disruptions in transportation, particularly the power outages on Eurostar routes in July 2024 and August 2024, resulted in increased reliance on the industry sector for alternative travel arrangements, as passengers had to seek refunds, rebook engagements, or alter their travel plans to accommodate for the delays.
