Refurbished and accessible rail stations unveiled by CTA as part of their RPM Phase One Project renovation initiative
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has recently completed a significant milestone with the renovation and reopening of four stations on the Red Line — Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr. This is the first time that this many stations have opened simultaneously since the Orange Line in 1993, marking a significant step forward in modernising Chicago's public transportation system.
The RPM Phase One, the largest completed transit investment in the CTA's history, is the project behind this transformation. The renovations aim to provide smoother, more reliable train service, and offer a brighter, cleaner, and more aesthetically pleasing pedestrian environment. Each station now features original artwork, and they are now fully accessible, with features such as escalators, elevators, and wider platforms.
The updated stations are larger than the previous ones, which were more than 100 years old. Improved lighting and security features have been implemented to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. The renovations are also expected to decrease overcrowding on trains and platforms, making the commuting experience more enjoyable for everyone.
The Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project doesn't stop here. Plans for the development of open spaces under the Red and Purple Line tracks between Lawrence and Ardmore avenues are set to begin in 2026 and be completed in 2027. This phase will create 10 blocks of open space with features including a pedestrian trail, dog parks, playground, fitness areas, benches, and flexible-use plaza space for community events.
As the CTA continues to invest in and modernise its infrastructure, commuters in Chicago can look forward to a more comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable public transportation system.
