Record-shattering sales surge for Tesla in April

Updated Report: Significant Slump in Tesla Sales in Europe

In a concerning turn of events for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla, sales in Europe plummeted by more than 50% in April 2025, compared to the same period the previous year. This revelation comes from the European car manufacturer association, ACEA.

The declining trend persists for the first four months of the year, with a total decrease of 46.1% in Tesla sales, equivalent to 41,677 electric vehicles sold. Although the broader European battery-electric vehicle market saw a growth of approximately 28% in April, Tesla's sales took a substantial hit.

The financial woes of Tesla extended beyond Europe, with the company reporting significant revenue declines and profit losses in April. Worldwide sales in the first quarter decreased by 13%. In response, CEO Elon Musk announced he would focus more on his electric vehicle company, scaling back his activities at the government efficiency department created by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Conversely, European and Chinese automakers are thriving as they capitalize on Tesla's setbacks in Europe. According to analysis firm Jato Dynamics, Tesla was recently surpassed by ten competitors, including Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, and Chinese brand BYD. BYD has even managed to overtake Tesla in Europe for pure electric vehicles in April.

Volkswagen increased its deliveries of pure electric vehicles in Europe by more than doubling in the first quarter, leaving Tesla far behind. BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle market leader, is swiftly closing in on Musk, as it has now surpassed him in Europe for pure electric vehicle sales.

The strong reputation of German manufacturers for quality might also be a factor benefiting them in the competition with Tesla and Chinese brands. According to a recent survey commissioned by consulting firm BearingPoint, German brands ranked first in trust for quality in every market surveyed—USA, China, France, and Germany. This good image gives German manufacturers a considerable advantage in the market.
