Russia's Regional Job Market: Highlights and Trends
A new study by the "Avito Rabota" platform has shed light on the job market in several regions of Russia, revealing some interesting trends and salary figures.
In the Zabaykalsky Krai, the region with the fourth highest increase in demand for labor force, machinists of special equipment and fitters are in high demand. Machinists earn around 134,925 rubles on average, while fitters have the highest salary levels among working specialties, with an average of 139,075 rubles per month for full-time employment. The number of job vacancies in the Zabaykalsky region has increased by 19% compared to last year.
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) tops the list with a 40% increase in job vacancies, driven by active construction and industrial development. Welders in the region earn the highest average salary at 245,016 rubles per month.
The Kostroma region, located in central Russia, also sees a 23% increase in job vacancies. Turners and milling machine operators in the region have job offers ranging from 163 to 213 thousand rubles. The Leningrad region, similar to Kostroma, also experiences wage growth, with turners and milling machine operators earning from 177 to 183 thousand rubles per month.
The Primorsky Krai, a region in Russia's Far East, has a 32% increase in job vacancies. Electricians in the region have the highest average salary (173,597 rubles), while concrete workers are second (170,196 rubles).
While the study did not specify the industries or sectors that have seen the most significant increase in demand for labor force in the mentioned regions, it is clear that key industries facing shortages and driving job opportunities are construction, manufacturing, logistics, and military-related sectors. This is especially notable in regions with active industrial and infrastructure development.
IT roles remain in strong demand nationwide, including in major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, driven by developing digital infrastructure and technology sectors.
It is important to note that wages vary across regions, with Moscow and some other major cities tending to have higher minimum wages, reflecting higher living costs and stronger labor demand in those regions. University graduates earned the highest average salaries in Russia in 2021, highlighting the premium placed on education and skilled labor.
The top paying jobs in Russia for 2021 primarily included specialized technical, managerial, and medical roles such as surgeons, IT specialists (e.g., cybersecurity managers, software engineering managers), artificial intelligence architects, and petroleum engineers. These occupations commanded higher salaries due to expertise and demand in their fields.
This situation reflects both structural economic demands and geopolitical factors shaping the Russian labor market around 2021-2025.
