Railway's Rough Ride: Head-Shaking Experience
DB Netz AG Scales Back Noise Barrier Construction in Lirich
DB Netz AG has reduced the construction of a noise barrier in Lirich, Oberhausen, due to technical limitations near Katharinen street. The railway company's decision to scale back the project has left residents frustrated and questioning the company's commitment to noise protection.
The technical issue at hand revolves around an adjacent level crossing, which creates safety and operational constraints that prevent building an adequate noise barrier in the area. Barriers close to the level crossing can interfere with sightlines and the operation of crossing gates, making it unsafe and impractical to erect a continuous noise protection wall there.
As a result, DB Netz AG has limited the extent of the noise barrier to sections where these technical and safety constraints do not apply. This adjustment explains the discrepancy between initial plans or promises and the final scale of the project.
Bülent Sahin, a directly elected city councilor for Lirich-Nord, shares the residents' dissatisfaction with the explanation. He notes that the embankment appears capable of supporting the transmission tower recently installed, but not a noise barrier. Sahin demands clarification from the political bodies of the railway regarding the reduced noise protection measures in Lirich.
In 2018, DB Netz AG initially promised extensive noise protection measures in Lirich. However, the company has since done a U-turn on these promises, leaving residents high and dry, much like the situation in Grafenbusch, where the railway decided against noise protection along the tracks a year ago.
The construction of noise barrier 15 will only extend up to beyond the railway bridge over Wilms street. This significant reduction in planned construction has raised concerns among the citizens of Lirich, who feel that their desire for proper noise protection is being dismissed by the railway.
Councilor Sahin suggests that seeking clarification from the city leadership could be a potential course of action. He expresses concern that the railway is dismissing the citizens' desire for proper noise protection twice within a year. The final word on noise protection in Lirich has not yet been spoken.
