Radiant Nuclear: Mobile Nuclear Power Plants from 2028
Radiant Nuclear is preparing to mass-produce portable nuclear reactors by 2028. The company has already secured major contracts, including deals with a U.S. military base and data centre operator Equinix. Each compact reactor will generate 1 megawatt of electricity and can be transported in a standard semi-trailer.
The reactors, named Kaleidos, are designed for quick deployment. Once delivered, they can be up and running within a single day. Their small size allows them to fit inside a semi-trailer, making transport straightforward.
Safety and efficiency are central to the design. The reactors use TRISO fuel technology, known for its durability, and helium cooling to maintain stable operation. Fuel replacement is only needed every five years, reducing maintenance demands. Each unit comes with a digital twin—a virtual replica that enables real-time monitoring and performance adjustments. This feature ensures the reactors adapt to changing conditions without manual intervention. Backed by over $500 million in funding, Radiant Nuclear has confirmed first customer deliveries will begin in 2028. The company’s early contracts highlight growing interest in reliable, off-grid power solutions for defence and commercial sectors.
The first Kaleidos reactors will reach customers in 2028, offering a mobile and efficient energy source. Their five-year fuel cycle and digital monitoring aim to reduce operational costs and downtime. With military and data centre contracts already in place, the technology is set to expand into other industries requiring dependable power.
