"QuartiersKiste": Smart Leasing in the York and Oxford Neighborhoods
Münster is set to trial a new waste-reduction scheme called QuartiersKiste in early 2026. The project introduces app-based lending cabinets in the York and Oxford districts, letting residents borrow items for free instead of buying new ones. Backed by federal funding, the initiative aims to cut waste and encourage sustainable living through technology.
The QuartiersKiste system was developed through a partnership between Münster’s waste management company (Abfallwirtschaftsbetriebe), Stadtlogistik Münster, and PAUL WOLFF GmbH. Local organisations like Wohn+Stadtbau GmbH, Konvoy GmbH, and Kurbelbox e.V. are also supporting the trial as network partners.
Residents can sign up now at *awm.unser-website/abfallfreiequartiere* to borrow items at no cost during the trial phase. The official launch is planned for spring 2026, with the software for the system becoming open-source shortly after. This will allow other cities to adopt the technology. The project is part of the broader *Zero-Waste Districts* initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development, and Building under the *Model Smart Cities* programme. Its success will be evaluated by the *Institute for Waste, Wastewater, and Infrastructure Management GmbH* in Ahlen, helping Münster—and potentially other municipalities—scale up effective measures.
The trial begins in January 2026, offering a free lending service to reduce household waste. If successful, the open-source software and proven methods could expand to more districts and cities. The scheme’s long-term goal is to improve sustainability through shared resources and better communication with residents.
