Riding the Electric Wave

Proposed Innovative Strategy to Overhaul Electricity Market by the Commission

A long-awaited wave is sweeping across the automotive landscape - the affordability of electric vehicles (EVs). The new BYD Dolphin Surf, priced at just 19,990 euros, is leading the charge, but the selection under 20,000 euros is steadily growing.

Many had hoped for this moment but few truly believed it was possible. However, electric cars are finally starting to become wallet-friendly with more and more options in the under-20k price bracket. The next major price barrier is poised to crumble, and the promise of serious EVs for under 20,000 euros is being made by Volkswagen and Renault.

The Power of the People's Car

While Europeans are just starting to catch up, the Chinese have once again taken the lead, offering the first price-friendly EVs on the market. Previously, these were limited to narrow, budget options suitable only as secondary or tertiary vehicles. But now, BYD is introducing the first genuine, grown-up subcompact EV with the Dolphin Surf.

A closer inspection of the fine print reveals that even the battery world champion stretches to meet that budget: The base price of 19,990 euros is a limited-time offer, with the standard 22,990 euro price due in the near future. This places the Dolphin Surf alongside models such as the Citroen eC3, Opel Frontera, Fiat Grande Panda, or the upcoming VW ID.2. The Chinese hope to make waves with their pricing strategy, but only time will tell if the registration numbers will confirm this.

The Top 5 Affordable Small EVs

BYD Dolphin Surf

If BYD has its way, the Dolphin Surf is more than just a game-changer. Measuring 4 meters in length and boasting a 2.5-meter wheelbase, this electric small car caters to grown-up tastes without compromising on a first-car experience. It comfortably seats four adults and their modest luggage, boasts top speeds of 150 km/h with 88 or 156 PS, and can cover over 500 km on a single charge in theory.

Volkswagen ID.1

Volkswagen is dipping its toes back into the affordable EV market with the ID. Every1 study. The goal? To offer a car for everyone at a price of just 20,000 euros (provided it ever makes it to market in two years). The ID. Every1 is a spacious, four-seater with a length of 3.8 meters, 305 liters of luggage capacity, and at least 250 km of range.

Renault Twingo

Renault is stepping back in time with the renewed Twingo, an electric city car boasting nostalgic charm. Modeled on the R5, Renault's hit from the past, the new Twingo holds promise for breaking the 20,000-euro barrier. The 3.75-meter-long electric vehicle comes with a battery estimated to last for just 300 km in city driving.

Dacia Spring

Dacia is poised to prove that it can deliver even more affordability with the successor to the Spring, coming next year from Romania as a reaction to EU import tariffs for Chinese EVs. With an entry price of 18,000 euros being suggested, the new Twingo won't have to rely on the same technological foundation as the current Spring, which starts at an unprecedented 16,900 euros.

Leapmotor T03

Stellantis has formed a partnership with Leapmotor to offer a cost-effective option under €20,000. The T03 boasts a wallet-friendly price of 18,900 euros, offering a practical, compact design with a 3.6-meter length, 2.4-meter wheelbase, four doors, and seating for up to five passengers. The T03 pushes the envelope with a powerful 95-horsepower electric motor and a 37.3 kWh battery, offering a range of up to 265 km in the NEDC cycle and supports charging at 6.6 or 45 kW.

The EV revolution is upon us, with affordable options now available for those looking to go green without breaking the bank. These five small cars are leading the charge for the next generation of budget-friendly electric vehicles.
