Private shipping business, Cargus, pumps over half a million euros into establishing a fresh logistics center in southwestern Romania
Cargus, a leading courier service provider in Romania, has announced the opening of a new logistics hub in Drobeta-Turnu Severin. This expansion marks a significant investment of over EUR 500,000 and doubles the size of their previous hub, spanning 560 square metres.
The new facility, located next to the city's ring road, will serve customers across Mehedinti, Caras-Severin, and Gorj counties. The growth strategy behind this expansion involves relocating to larger, more efficient facilities to accommodate the steady increase in parcel volumes and regional team growth.
Key features of the new logistics hub include two truck ramps equipped with eco-friendly docking systems, an extended sorting belt to improve parcel handling, and multiple loading and unloading gates aimed at reducing handling times. State-of-the-art surveillance systems with remote monitoring and mobile access capabilities have also been installed to ensure smooth operations.
These upgrades are designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance working conditions for employees, and provide a better customer experience overall. The new hub is expected to increase Cargus's parcel processing capacity by 60%, now handling up to 4,000 parcels per day.
Nelu Gheorghită, Chief Operations Officer at Cargus, stated that the relocation was a response to the steady increase in parcel volumes and the growth of regional teams. Cargus currently employs more than 2,600 people in Romania and operates five national sorting centres, two gateway depots, and 36 warehouses across the country.
In addition to the new hub in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Cargus operates a cross-border hub in Poland for international deliveries. The company expanded its capabilities in 2021 by acquiring QeOPS, a leading provider of e-fulfilment and custom logistics solutions in Romania.
It is worth noting that Mid Europa, a private equity firm, signed an agreement to sell Cargus to Sameday, a major competitor in the courier market. The transaction is currently awaiting regulatory approval. Since 2019, Cargus has been part of the Mid Europa Partners Investment Fund.
Parcels processed at the new facility will be delivered both to home addresses and through the Cargus SHIP & GO network, which offers a wide range of services including door-to-door deliveries and out-of-home solutions via over 2,000 SHIP & GO points and parcel lockers.
This expansion highlights Cargus’s commitment to strengthening its regional logistics network and meeting growing courier demand in southwestern Romania. The new logistics hub in Drobeta-Turnu Severin is the first of three planned hub relocations for 2025, demonstrating an accelerated push to enhance logistical capabilities in the region.
The growth strategy of Cargus includes expanding to larger, more efficient facilities to accommodate the increasing parcel volumes and regional team growth, as they aim to improve operational efficiency, working conditions, and customer experience. Such expansion, as seen in the new facility in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, will also strengthen the company's financial position within the business and industry sectors by increasing its parcel processing capacity.
