Rhein-Kreis Neuss: Adapting to Challenges for Long-term Prosperity

The Rhein-Kreis Neuss, nestled in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is feeling the pinch of numerous challenges, yet it's gearing up with strategic maneuvers to maintain economic health and job security amid global turbulence, coal phase-out, and structural changes.

The downturn of coal-fired power generation and the associated structural shift has become a formidable ordeal for local economies and employment. Moreover, the digitalization wave and the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) are rocking industrial processes and business models, calling for adaptation by local players. Additionally, political and economic uncertainty looms due to shifts in the 2025 German federal election results, which may affect national economic policies and regional development.

County Commissioner Hans-Jürgen Petrauschke views the encouraging unemployment numbers as a stepping stone to address these challenges more effectively. "Our economic location is our strength, but we need to strengthen it further to overcome the challenges. Our companies crave stability and predictability," he stresses. A stable energy supply, reasonable costs, and international competitiveness, Petrauschke believes, are the cornerstones for a successful regional economic ecosystem.

In a bid to preserve and generate jobs, the county commissioner appeals to the traffic light coalition in Berlin. "We aim for prosperity and quality of life here, and that relies on keeping and creating jobs," he concludes.

In September 2023, Germany witnessed a drop of 69,000 unemployed individuals compared to August, standing at 2.627 million. Albeit lower than the previous year by 141,000 jobless individuals, the unemployment rate inched up by 0.1 percentage points to 5.7% compared to August [data from Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg].

Embracing the Hydrogen Economy and Digital Transformation

To meet the European Union's climate goals and secure jobs in the clean energy sector, the region boasts the "H2Valley RheinRuhr"—a strong alliance envisioning the Rhine-Ruhr area, including Rhein-Kreis Neuss, as a leading player in hydrogen technologies. This project, backed by EU and NRW state funding, demonstrates a renewable energy system based on hydrogen, promising new industrial avenues and safeguarding jobs in the clean energy sector.

In addition, programs targeted at start-ups such as Quickies encourage digitalization and AI adoption, helping keep regional industries competitive on the global stage. Sustainable personnel development, team cohesion, and employee retention initiatives are also key to maintaining workforce stability during tumultuous economic shifts.

Advancing Beyond Recycling: A Circular Economy

A transition from traditional recycling to a circular economy model is underway in Rhein-Kreis Neuss. This approach aims to maintain value creation locally, enhancing the region's economic resilience and security.

The area's strategic location on the Rhine and excellent transport accessibility boost business attraction and skilled labor retention, fostering a balanced economic climate.

In essence, Rhein-Kreis Neuss is learning to adapt to the intricacies of the coal phase-out, structural economic changes, and global uncertainties through innovative strategies centered on hydrogen energy, digital transformation, workforce development, and sustainability initiatives. These moves aim to pave the way for long-term economic growth and job security, ensuring a prosperous and high-quality future for the region.
