Presentation: Utilizing Landfill Gas for Renewable Natural Gas Generation via Pipeline in Franklin County

On the 14th of June, 2018, LMOP and EPA's Natural Gas STAR Program put together a webinar showcasing a successful landfill gas (LFG) to energy project that transformed LFG into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG).

Way back in February 2014, the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), teaming up with Aria Energy in a public-private partnership, lit the spark for an LFG to RNG project at the Franklin County Landfill in Grove City, Ohio. The project took a leap forward in 2015, handling 6.8 million cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of LFG. Aria Energy's high-Btu gas upgrading facility collects, processes, and refines the LFG. Afterward, it's injected into a Columbia Gas of Ohio pipeline for sales in the vehicle fuel markets.

The occasion featured two speakers, representatives from the project developer and the natural gas utility, who dove into their experiences collaborating to bring this project to life. The webinar ended with a question-and-answer session. Here were the key players:

  • Jay Hopper - Aria Energy's number-two dude in Business Development. With more than 50 LFG projects under their belt spanning a 25-year career, Aria Energy has been a long-time partner with LMOP.
  • Mike Anderson - NiSource Gas Distribution's Director of Supply Development. NiSource, allied with the Natural Gas STAR and Methane Challenge Programs, serves nearly four million customers across seven states through its NIPSCO and Columbia Gas utilities.

For some extra context on similar projects and the involved entities, I've got you covered:

Landfill Gas to Energy Projects:- These projects zero in on capturing methane from landfills, using it to generate electricity or manufacture renewable natural gas (RNG). This process helps slash greenhouse gas emissions and provides a dependable energy source.

Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO):- SWACO oversees waste management in Franklin County, Ohio. They often take part in initiatives geared toward reducing waste and boosting energy efficiency.

Aria Energy:- Aria Energy is a company strongly focused on developing renewable energy projects, including those utilizing landfill gas.

NiSource Gas Distribution:- NiSource is a utility company offering natural gas distribution services. They may be involved in energy projects that channel RNG into their distribution networks.

To find specifics about the partnership between these entities on the Franklin County Landfill Gas to Pipeline Renewable Natural Gas Energy Project, it's best to reach out to them directly or search for press releases or project announcements from these organizations.

  1. The Franklin County Landfill, managed by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), collaborated with Aria Energy in 2014 to transform landfill gas (LFG) into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG), a project that became operational in 2015.
  2. Aria Energy, a company specializing in renewable energy projects, utilizes science to upgrade LFG, which is then injected into the Columbia Gas of Ohio pipeline for financial gains in the vehicle fuel markets.
  3. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Natural Gas STAR Program and LMOP organized a webinar featuring Jay Hopper from Aria Energy and Mike Anderson from NiSource Gas Distribution, to discuss their joint efforts on the successful LFG to energy project.
  4. NiSource, a utility company allied with the Natural Gas STAR and Methane Challenge Programs, serves a vast portion of customers, and, by partnering with Aria Energy, has the potential to incorporate landfill gas (LFG) into their renewable energy ventures.
