Kazakhstan Launches Nationwide Competition to Name Planned Nuclear Power Plant

The Kazakhstan Nuclear Energy Agency has initiated preparations for a nationwide competition to name a planned nuclear power plant in the village of Ulken, Zhambyl district of the Almaty Region. The competition was proposed by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The competition aims to select a name that reflects historical, cultural, and national values and symbolizes trust and unity among Kazakh citizens. A working group has been established by the agency to develop the competition algorithm, rules, deadlines, and the procedure for receiving and reviewing submissions. The group has until August 29, 2025, to complete its task.

An information and awareness campaign will be conducted through various media and official communication channels to encourage participation in the competition. The specific final deadlines for submission and the full set of detailed rules are to be announced shortly after the working group completes its draft.

The competition committee, consisting of representatives from the public, the creative industry, nuclear energy experts, philology, and history, will be formed as part of the ongoing preparations for the nationwide competition. Their role in the competition process is yet to be explicitly mentioned, but it can be inferred that they will play a significant part.

The construction of the nuclear plant began officially on August 8, 2025, and the competition preparations are ongoing. The competition is a significant event in Kazakhstan, reflecting the country's commitment to nuclear energy and its desire to involve the public in the process.
