Global stock markets, even in Denmark, have been on a rollercoaster lately due to US trade tariffs announced by President Donald Trump. But what does that mean for your Danish pension savings?

Recent market turmoil has made headlines as stock prices plummeted, only to recover when the tariffs were partially suspended. The ongoing trade feud between the US and China is still unfolding.
Economists at pension fund PFA in Denmark, Camilla Schjølin Poulsen, and personal finance specialist Brian Friis Helmer, have witnessed an increase in pension savers' anxieties about the security of their investments.
Can global trade wars, which seem far removed from Denmark, empty the value out of Danish pensions?
"I understand the concern and feeling of insecurity when we don't know what lies ahead," Poulsen said in an interview with Ritzau. "But it's crucial to stay as calm as possible."
High volatility caused by tariff-related global market uncertainty is eroding the solid returns Danish pensions have seen from recent investments.
"Your pension savings might have taken a hit, but my advice is not to panic and check your account daily," Poulsen added.

Instead, consider when you'll need your pension savings. Ultimately, time is a major factor when considering long-term investments. Crises come and go, but historically, stocks tend to increase over time.
If you're near retirement age and concerned about immediate access to your pension, pension funds mitigate risk by investing a larger portion of your savings in low-risk bonds as opposed to stocks.
On the flip side, if you're years away from retirement, there's generally time to regain lost pension value. "Remember that pensions are a long-term investment," Helmer said. "The investments persist even after you start withdrawing money from your pension."
