That's how I lost my faith in the Catholic Church.

When the Bible fell short of answers, when words fell on deaf ears, when I witnessed the everyday hypocrisy, it was easy to lose trust in people, rituals, and institutions.

They who spout sermons about love yet betray their spouses, cheat their employees, and deceive in business. They who attend mass weekly yet steal, lie, and commit fraud. They who wear a saintly mask inside houses of worship, revealing their demonic nature outside.

Hypocrisy soured my view on religion.

Just when I was ready to give up, along came Jorge Mario Bergoglio, named Pope Francis in honor of Francis of Assisi, the saint who embraced poverty.
