Pope Leo XIV reaffirms Catholic stance on marriage as one man, one woman

Pope Leo XIV has released a new document defending the traditional view of marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Titled One Flesh – In Praise of Monogamy, the text criticizes modern trends like polygamy, adultery, and polyamory while reaffirming Catholic teachings on sexuality.

The document, signed by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn in Vienna last November, describes unity as the core principle of marriage, rejecting practices that challenge this ideal. Polygamy, in particular, is called a 'pastoral challenge' for the church, especially in African regions where the custom persists.

The Vatican’s latest statement reinforces long-standing doctrine on monogamy while addressing contemporary debates. It highlights the tension between religious teachings and evolving social norms. The church’s position remains firm: marriage is a lifelong commitment between two people.
